It was a perfect day at  Independence Park for the Sunday farmers market.

Still, couldn’t help feeling a little sad, as it’s the last farmers market of the season. When park volunteers started the famers market a few years ago there wasn’t much to see or buy- someone selling soap, another selling danishes and maybe one farmer with produce.  Now it’s turned into my absolute favorite neighborhood event.  Lots of farmers and crafters arrive here on Sundays selling their wares, there’s a kids craft corner and neighbors get together for a fabulous bluegrass jam.  Last market brought  a local dog trainer showing his tricks and a belly dance school came with their dancers!  You never know who might show up. Local non-profits also come to make sure the community knows what they’re up to.  And I always see neighbors and friends.  It feels like a small town gathering in the middle of the big city.

On top of all that excitement, there’s the great foods, grown by local farmers.  Could there a more entertaining or healthy way to go shopping? Thanks to all the farmers, vendors and volunteers who made this years Independence Park Farmers Market such a success.  Can’t wait to see you all again in the spring!

Just another day at the neighborhood playground.  Life here’s always an adventure.  Glad I live where I do.

It’s the one day a year when lederhosen & dirndles are cool… Chicago’s Von Steuben Day Parade. Wunderbar!

Baron Friedrich von Steuben came to this country as a volunteer offering his services to General George Washington and is said to have converted the revolutionary army into a disciplined fighting force, instilling in them much needed inspiration, confidence and competence.

Here in Chicago, we honor his efforts with beer, brats and pretzels.

The highlight of the festivities was an appearance by my favorite local band- the Polkaholics!!

I can’t believe I was only a few feet from them. It’s hip to be square! No, I’m not referring to the lovely child below, but the rockin’ band.

Speaking of the child, I just couldn’t resist!  In honor of General von Steuben, I dressed my daughter in the latest German fashion. Do you think she’ll ever forgive me?

Crazy storm flew into Chicago yesterday… not sure which one more exciting… the Air Force’s or mother nature’s that delayed the Air & Water Show for 2 hours.  Glad I had a front row seat for both!

The walk through the forest down to the beach was part of the fun during our recent camping trip, but the highlight was running down the sand dunes to Lake Michigan!

Enjoyed a night at the Victorian Village Resort in Elkart Lake, WI,  a charming old resort town, 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. My father-in law remembered coming here as a kid.  Charming vacation spot on a crystal clear lake… whole family had a blast!  Staff entertained guests with their own Broadway musical revue show… felt like it was straight out of Dirty Dancing… adorable!

Cover of a new graphic novel? Nope, it’s part of the Art Institute’s new exhibit of pre-WWII Soviet posters. Great history lesson for a teen or tween.
